Geographical Region of Focus

Much of Biblical prophecy focuses on the land of Israel and other nations in relation to it.

More specifically, the focus of prophecy highlights the arrival and re-arrival of a special leader, the Messiah.  His first arrival was in Jerusalem.

When Jesus Christ entered history 2000 years ago there were over 300 specific predictions literally fufilled in his birth, life and death.  While he taught in Jerusalem over a three and 1/2 year period, he made several prophecies concerning a return after his death and resurrection.

"In the New Testament the Second Coming is mentioned 318 times.  For every time that the First Coming is mentioned once, the Second Coming is mentioned eight times" (Oswald J. Smith, Prophecy -- What Lies Ahead? 1943, p. 47)

Dr. John Walvoord writes that, "It has been estimated that one out of every twenty five verses in the N.T. is a reference either to the rapture of the church or to the second coming of Christ and his reign over the earth" (Major Bible Prophecies, 1991, p.368).

Document Focus: the Bible

Dr. John Walvoord, called by some the "dean of Bible prophecy," wrote that:

"About 1/4 of the Bible was prophecy when it was written," and

"Approximately half of the prophecies of the Bible have already been fulfilled in a literal way" (Prophecy Knowledge Handbook, 1990, 10).  Hal Lindsey, a leaading prophecy scholar in the U.S., estimates that over half of the Bible's prophecies have been fulfilled.

Prophecy Scholars League uses the Bible as their primary source of documentation for prophetic study.

Interpretation Principle.

We implement a plain approach to interpretation.  That is, we use an ordinary historical, grammatical approach to interpreting the meaning of the text, the same hermeneutical standard for the examination of any historical document.  As a principle, Dr. David L. Cooper (1886-1965) recommends,

"When the plain sense of Scripture makes common sense, seek no other sense; therefore, take every word at its primary, ordinary, usual, literal meaning unless the facts of the immediate text, studied in light of related passages and axiomatic and fundamental truths, clearly indicate otherwise."

Design of the Prophecy Scholars League

PSL is designed to be a reading group (see Reading Group page for more).  A reading group is a group of people organized for the purpose of learning about a topic and then engaging one another in discussion about it.

It was originally created on a college campus, and so it provides a sample Associated Students constitution (see below).  However, PSL is not exclusive to college campuses.  Prophecy Scholars Leagues can be created anywhere.

In our chapter at Monterey Peninsula College we have members who are both MPC students as well as those who are not.  We are sponsored by Campus Crusade for Christ (which has a campus Associate Students club) and Navigators (which does not).

The prime mission of Prophecy Scholars League is four-fold:

On the vertical relationship to God:

1.  To Endure to the end (as the Lord challenges each believer in His letters to the seven churches in Revelation 1 and 2).

On the horizontal relationship with others:

2.  To Educate others (to avoid being the "dumb dog" who never barks when danger is around, but the watch dog who faithfully barks at danger; to be the watchmen on the city gates, letting others knows what is on the horizon and how they can prepare).

3.  To Encourage others (to edify, or build people up in the faith; to use prophecy to lighten the spirits of fellow-believers who sometimes get discouraged over the issues and problems of everyday living; to allow prophecy to have an energizing, encouraging effect on others).

4.  To Evangelize others (someone has described evangelizing as "one beggar telling another beggar where to get bread," and that is the message we can take to those who are not yet saved; to share the pardon offered by God through faith in Jesus Christ; to bring the Kingdom of God to people through the gospel message "you're forgiven, just receive the pardon by faith.")

Prophecy Scholars League has four basic purposes:

1.  The study of prophecy, especially Biblical prophecy as it applies to historical, current and future events;

2.  Reading and discussion of prophecy in relation to current events, public and national policy, and future planning;

3.  Personal development and growth of its members, especially intellectual, social, and spiritual;

4.  Various forms of service to the school, community, state and nation.

Prophecy Scholars League Constitution

NOTE:  This is not the constitution, but merely a proposed initial sample of one in the event the club grows to the size where they need something to get started with Associated Students.

What we do.

As a league of scholars we shall:

  • Meet regularly.
  • Welcome all who come with a sincere desire to learn Biblical prophecy and apply it to current and future events (C.A.F.E.).
  • Adhere to sound principles of textual interpretation; that is, the normal, literal, grammatical and historical reading of a text.
  • Encourage scholarly, honest, sincere and kind discussions, always being mindful of a dual pursuit of truth and fellowship with others.
  • Endeavor to both apply our learning and enact our values; by this we include personal application of spiritual truths, personal application of intellectual principles, and enacting the values explicitly taught through the study of Biblical prophecy, such as service to others.
  • Encourage the formation of this league at other locations and campuses, either as we depart from here and travel away, or as we meet others from campuses nearby.
